Description

Preparing Lifting Operations

Study lifting plans and load weights

Select proper lifting tools and rigging equipment

Inspect slings, shackles, hooks, wire ropes, and chains before use

Ensure lifting gear is certified and safe

2. Rigging Heavy Components

Attach loads securely using:

Wire ropes

Chain blocks

Slings

Shackles

Turnbuckles

Balance loads properly to avoid tilting or falling

3. Assisting Crane Operations

Guide crane operators using hand signals or radio communication

Direct safe movement of ship blocks, engines, pipes, and steel structures

Maintain clear communication during lifting activities

4. Load Handling & Positioning

Move large ship sections into exact positions during assembly

Align machinery and structural components

Use tag lines to control swinging loads

5. Safety Responsibilities

Follow shipyard safety rules and lifting procedures

Identify hazards before lifting

Ensure personnel stay clear of suspended loads

Use PPE:

Helmet

Gloves

Safety shoes

Harness when working at height

6. Equipment Inspection & Maintenance

Check rigging tools for wear, corrosion, or damage

Report defective lifting gear

Maintain rigging equipment properly

7. Working in Shipyard Environments

Riggers commonly work:

Inside dry docks

On ship hulls

At heights

In confined spaces

Near heavy machinery and cranes
