Pune Metro, which opened for business in December 2016, promotes rapid, open transit and helps reduce crazy traffic in the city. 16 underutilized stations have been added to Pune Metro’s operating schedule as of March 2024, and current line extension is planned to pass through underutilized neighborhoods.
The Pune Metro was conceptualized in 2009, and the foundation stone was placed in December 2016. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MahaMetro), with an estimated cost of more than Rs 11,400 crore, has integrated both above-ground and below-ground options in the two partially functional corridors connecting Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi.
In March 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi essentially introduced Pune Metro 6 km extend from Ruby Corridor Clinic to Ramwadi. He too performed bhoomi pooja for 4.4 km Pimpri to Nigdi extent.
Prior, in August 2023, the PM introduced Garware College Station to Ruby Corridor Clinic Station on the Water Line and Phugewadi to Shivajinagar on the Purple Line of Pune Metro. The European Investment Bank too affirmed a €150 million 20-year advance to bolster the development of Pune city’s metro rail. The project was co-financed with Agence Française de Développement (AFD).
With the later introduction of Ruby Lobby Clinic – Ramwadi Extend, around 26 stations are presently operational. These incorporate 11 stations on the Purple Line and 16 stations on the Aqua Line. Corridor 2: Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi)
Vanaz in the west is connected to Ramwadi in the east by the Pune Metro’s Aqua Line. The elevated line has 16 stations and a length of 15.7 kilometers. Passengers will now be able to travel from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi thanks to the new line that PM Modi opened.

Corridor 3: Metropolitan Line (Civil Court-Megapolis Circle)
The Metropolitan Line, the 3rd corridor with 23 stations, is under construction and will span 23.3 kilometers. There will be stations at Embassy Quadron Business Park, Dohler, and Infosys Phase II, to name a few, on this fully elevated line that will serve the city’s IT hubs. Shivaji Nagar will serve as the Purple Line’s interchange station, and Civil Court will assist with the Aqua Line’s interchange.

LATEST STATUS ON PUNE METRO
PM Narendra Modi has hailed off Ruby Corridor Facility to Ramwadi segment of Pune Metro Line 2 on March 6, 2024. The estimated travel time from Vanaz to Ramwadi is 35 minutes, and the estimated travel time from PMPC to Ramwadi is 45 minutes.
Additionally, according to Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro), a train will run every 7.5 minutes during peak hours and every 10 minutes during non-peak hours.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has given its gesture of approval for the following phase of Pune Metro’s extension, flagging the starting of Stage II.
To further improve traffic flow, the Maharashtra government has approved an 82.5 km extension for Phase 2, adding 3 new stations (Nigdi, Akurdi, Chinchwad) to the Pimpri Chinchwad to Swargate route. This expansion project is estimated to cost Rs 910.18 crore.
It is anticipated that this expanded route will cost more than Rs. 900 crore. In order to speed up the project, the MMRC has by then begun the process of hiring a general consultant. This addition, from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation corridor to the Swargate, brings the total number of stations in the Metro connectivity in Pune up to 33 and brings its total length to 37.6 kilometers.
